Karen DeSalvo, M.D., MPH, MSc Professor of Medicine and Population Health, University of Texas Dell Medical School Karen B. DeSalvo, MD, MPH, MSc, is Professor of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. She is a nationally recognized health policy leader and physician executive working at the intersection of medicine, public health, and information technology to improve the health of people and communities with a focus on catalyzing solutions to address the social determinants of health. She is co-convener of the National Alliance to Impact the Social Determinants of Health (nasdoh.org) with former HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt. Dr. DeSalvo served as Assistant Secretary for Health (Acting) and concurrently as the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (National Coordinator) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the Obama Administration. Under her leadership, HHS set and met historic goals in payment reform, supported the transformation of care delivery. She developed the vision of Public Health 3.0 as the future of health model that leverages multi-sectoral, public and private sector partnerships to address the social determinants of health. As the National Coordinator, she set national strategy and policy on health IT and advanced policy established a consumer focused data interoperability system. Prior to joining HHS, Dr. DeSalvo served as Health Commissioner for the City of New Orleans where she led a transformational effort to address community health challenges - including violence, nutritional and physical fitness, and mental health. She also led the re-establishment of a community public hospital. She was previously Vice Dean for Community Affairs and Health Policy at Tulane School of Medicine. She was an instrumental leader in the effort to re-engineer health care in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in to a model grounded in primary care, enabled by health information technology, and supported by a value-based care payment model. Dr. DeSalvo is a director on the boards of Humana and Welltower, an executive advisor for LRVHealth, and a member of the Advisory Board for Verily Life Sciences. She serves on the Medicare Payment Advisory (MedPAC). Dr. DeSalvo is the President of the Society of General Internal Medicine and Honorary Vice President, United States, for the American Public Health Association and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. DeSalvo earned her Medical Doctorate and Masters in Public Health from Tulane University, and has a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health. Chairman, Swinomish Tribal Community Brian Cladoosby, a strong leader in Indian Country and a tireless advocate for Native Americans, currently serves as Chairman of the Swinomish Tribal Community and as the 21st President of the National Congress of American Indians. Chairman Cladoosby also currently serves as President of the Association of Washington Tribes, Executive Board member of the Washington Gaming Association, Co-Speaker of the Coast Salish Gathering (consisting of British Columbia First Nations and Western Washington Tribes), and is a former President of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians. In 2009, Chairman Cladoosby was honored by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and earned the Coast Salish Gathering the Partners in Conservation Award for his contributions to the 2008 Tribal Journey Water Quality Project. In 2010, he was selected from a pool of 571 candidates as one of only twelve tribal leaders to attend the first government-to-government meeting of President Obama's administration. In 2011, Cladoosby was honored with the American Indian Tribal Leader Award at the Reservation Economic Summit & American Indian Business Trade Fair for his exceptional achievements in the field of tribal economic development. She is the author of Transform your Boundaries® (2014) and Naming and Taming Overwhelm for Healthcare and Human Service Providers (2017). She has a private therapy/counseling practice on Whidbey Island and devotes the rest of her time traveling and teaching on the subject of boundaries and overwhelm recovery, trauma, and the reflective process SoulCollage® Ms. Gilman's presentation will be on Thursday, October 3rd, during breakfast.

With an MBA specializing in leadership and performance, Ms. Roberts has been an adjunct faculty member for the MBA and leadership programs at City University of Seattle, Bellevue College and Everett Community College. In addition, she is a Certified Executive Coach, has an Associate in Risk Management, and was a faculty member for the US Navy’s Lean Six Sigma College where she teaches the people side of continuous process improvement.
